Touhou Project is a doujin franchise created by Team Shanghai Alice, who is actually only one man, a skinny drunkard known as ZUN. A visual experience once described as "a fireworks display being sick", the Touhou games are a series of bullet hell shmups with an all-female cast - all tastefully dressed, amazingly enough - and stellar background music. Arguably most notable about Touhou, however, is its fanbase. The fandom has taken on a life of its own, having made countless music arranges, doujins and fangames, and even going to so far as to create unofficial anime episodes. Between the fangames and anime episodes, the fandom has even managed to pull some major voice acting names, including the likes of Miyuki Sawashiro, Rie Tanaka, Ryoko Shintani, Mai Nakahara, Ryo Hirohashi and Kikuko Inoue. How utterly psychotic and dedicated is this fanbase? On Pixiv, the Japanese equivalent of Deviantart, as of 11/17/2010, the number of images with tags for Pokemon, Vocaloid and Hetalia COMBINED only equals roughly 75% of the number of images with the Touhou tag ALONE. This panel is designed to be accessible to fans of all familiarity levels. If you're a brand new fan, you'll get to watch - I kid you not - a cute-but-brainless hell raven girl that has swallowed a god, grown a third leg (no, that's NOT a euphemism for you-know-what), turned megalomaniacal and now has total control over nuclear fusion and fights by blasting her opponent with miniature suns while wearing a cape with the universe embroidered on it. If you're an existing fan, you know exactly who that is and that you'll enjoy watching that fight, but you may or may not know the significance of phrases such as "Miss Yukari, Please At Least Put On Some Clothes", "Come Together For Native Faith", "25 Mushroom Code" or "RaphAyal The Raven". There will almost surely be something you've never seen before, but even if there isn't, you know you're in for a visual assault impressive in both its beauty and difficulty. Whatever your level of familiarity, we hope to see you there!
