Anime Boston has a continuing storyline uniting its cosplay programming. This plotline consists of a series of performances by Anime Boston attendees as well as staff, in costume and in character, enacting skits, competitions and battles to create a story connecting the Anime Dating Game, the Masquerade, Catch the Barrel and Cosplay Chess. Some of these events are skit performances or game shows, while others are team competitions between groups of cosplayers such as Ninjas, Pirates or Shinigami. Each separate event is complete in itself, but attendees or audience members who watch or participate in all the events get to watch their favorite characters progress and help their favorite teams to victory. The participants and events of the plotline are partly decided in advance, but the actual winners of competitions and rivalries are determined by the participants and the audience, live, as events progress.
This year's cosplot will focus on AB2012's "Post-Apocalyptic" theme with an epic "Good vs. Evil" storyline.
Participating in the Cosplot:
If you wish to participate in a single event, such as Cosplay Chess or the Anime Dating Game, simply fill out an application for that event. If your character fits well with the Cosplot you will be contacted about participating in the Cosplot components of that event.
If you are interested in helping in many events, as well as in planning and organizing the Continuing Cosplay Plotline, then you may fill out the Cosplot Application. Cosplot Volunteers will be expected to exchange frequent e-mails with the Cosplot Coordinator and other participants before the convention and to commit considerable time and effort to preparing these unique events. Cosplot Volunteers will also be required to help with multiple events and devote many at-con hours to Cosplot work. Not all applicants will be accepted, and applicants are required to have considerable experience with Anime Boston Cosplot events and/or other similar events.
Participation in the Cosplot is only open to people who have participated in other Anime Boston cosplay events in past years, meaning veterans of Cosplay Chess, the Anime Dating Game, past Cosplots, past Masquerades or who have helped in other ways with Cosplot events. We have this restriction because Cosplot Volunteers have a big impact on whether events are successful or not, so the staff needs to have worked with you before to know you are reliable before we trust you with such important tasks. We also need people who already know how our major events, like Chess, work so you can help us run them. There is a space on the application form to specify your past participation in Anime Boston events. For those who are at Anime Boston for the first time, or who have not participated in the past, we encourage you to apply to Chess and the Dating Game so you can learn about these events before you try to help run them.
Note: There will be very few people selected to participate in the Cosplot, and they will all be required to put in many more hours than before. Working for the Cosplot will eat ALL your time at the con and for weeks beforehand - apply at your own risk. Cosplot Volunteers who put in many hours of pre- and at-con work may receive comp badges or other compensation.
Ideally, Cosplot Volunteers should have costume(s) of character(s) pertinent to the ongoing story, or who would make good cameo or additional characters, or fit well with the theme. Ideally, Cosplot Volunteers will also be willing and able to make new costumes and props in line with the needs of the Cosplot. When you apply, you will be asked to list all the costumes you have at your disposal and the administrators will select those most useful for the plot. All costumes are acceptable, including commissioned costumes, but all costumes must comply with the Anime Boston Weapons' Policy and must be legal in the state of Massachusetts.
Sorry, but the Cosplot application form is not currently available.
The application cutoff for Applying to be a Cosplot Volunteer is January 6th, 2012.
Note: Minors applying must submit a participation permission form signed by a parent or guardian. The permission form can be found here.
